Promoting physical activity and wellbeing among children

Cooperation between Touhula daycare centres and childrenswear company Reima focuses on children’s physical activity and wellbeing. Over half of Touhula’s ECEC centres have a focus on physical activity whereas, through its products, Reima has been enabling outdoor and physical activity among children throughout its over 70-year history.

Children over the age of 5 can use ReimaGO activity trackers at Touhula ECEC centres. The purpose of the tracker is to monitor and support physical activity among children during care time.

It is recommended that children under the age of 8 have at least three hours of physical activities each day. This should comprise light exercise and vigorous outdoor activity, as well as very energetic physical activity. A pilot completed in the autumn of 2018 revealed that, on average, children at Touhula ECEC centres engage in 2.5 hours of physical activity per day while in ECEC.

ReimaGo activity trackers provide additional information on the impact of education intended to increase physical activity. The trackers provide information on how daycare instructors can help children to increase their physical activity during ECEC, and how the overall day can be structured to foster activity. ECEC staff and the parents can use their own application to monitor their children’s activity. The application also rewards activity during the day.

Touhula provides Reima rainwear for use by children in a few of its ECEC centres. The aim of this is to test a cooperation model based on which it is no longer necessary for families to bring rainwear to the ECEC centre.
